Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) have developed an innovative information-hiding camera to optically transform and conceal input images into ordinary-looking patterns, providing a powerful solution for visual information security. The work is published in the journal Science Advances.

The UCLA team introduced an information-hiding camera that integrates an optical encoder with an electronic decoder, jointly optimized through deep learning. This novel system optically transforms sensitive input images into seemingly ordinary patterns, concealing information from unintended observers while allowing secure decoding by authorized users.

The research, led by Aydogan Ozcan, Chancellor’s Professor and Volgenau Chair for Engineering Innovation at UCLA, represents a significant advancement for visual data privacy. Their work addresses the growing need for secure communication methods that do not attract attention by signaling the presence of hidden information.

How it works

The core of this technology is a diffractive optical processor that manipulates light to optically transform input images into ordinary-looking patterns. This optical transformation occurs through passive light-matter interactions within the processor, making it both high-speed and energy-efficient. The concealed information can then be accurately reconstructed using an electronic decoder network trained alongside the optical encoder.

The researchers demonstrated the effectiveness of their approach by designing cameras that operate under various lighting conditions and noise levels. They also extended the design to multi-spectral operation, allowing for the simultaneous concealment and decoding of multiple images at different wavelengths.

Practical applications

This information-hiding camera offers numerous practical applications, particularly in scenarios where digital communication security is paramount. Unlike traditional cryptographic methods that use encrypted messages and can draw attention, this system all-optically conceals data behind ordinary images, making it an ideal solution for covert information transmission.

“Cryptography and steganography have long been used to protect sensitive data, but they have limitations, especially in terms of data embedding capacity and vulnerability to compression and noise,” explained Dr. Ozcan, the study’s corresponding author.

“Our optical encoder-electronic decoder system overcomes these issues, providing a faster, more energy-efficient, and scalable solution for information concealment.”

The team validated their framework experimentally using terahertz (THz) radiation. They successfully fabricated a diffractive layer using 3D printing, demonstrating the experimental feasibility of the system. These experimental results closely matched the numerical simulations, showcasing the system’s robustness and accuracy.

Future prospects

This research opens up new possibilities for secure visual data processing and communication. The adaptability and robustness of the system make it suitable for various applications, from secure communications in sensitive fields to everyday digital privacy solutions. The team envisions future enhancements, including multi-user secret communication and additional layers of security through electronic encryption.

“Our approach represents a significant step forward in the integration of optical and electronic systems for secure data processing,” said Dr. Ozcan. “We are excited about the potential applications and look forward to further developing this technology.”

Kangaroo teeth grow forever—and keep a record of their owner’s age and sex

How do you find out the age of a wild animal? For some Australian marsupials, we have discovered you can tell from their teeth.

In a new paper published in Archives of Oral Biology, we show that the front teeth of kangaroos record their age in a number of different ways—and they can even tell us if the roo is male or female.

Long in the tooth

Finding out the age of a wild animal can be important for vets, ecologists and conservationists. Wildlife welfare and assessing the overall health of a population both depend on knowing the age of the animals involved.

With no-one counting birthdays in the bush, scientists often turn to the teeth of wild animals to work out how old they are.

Most of Australia’s marsupials are members of a group called Diprotodontia. This name refers to the animals having large, straight incisor teeth in their lower jaws.

Kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, wombats and possums are all diprotodontian marsupials. In our study, we measured the growth of these incisor teeth in kangaroos and honey possums and found they never stop growing.

We can use this continuous growth to age marsupials by exactly how long they’ve grown in the tooth.

Tree rings and tooth lines

Much like trees have growth rings, teeth have growth lines. These lines form as the different hard tissues that make up a tooth (enamel, dentine and cementum) are added over time.

We looked at the growth lines in kangaroo incisor teeth to see if there’s a record of age there as well. It turns out that yearly growth lines can be found in two different regions of these teeth.

Marching molars

Another weird way we can tell the age of a kangaroo is by measuring the movement of its molars.

Because eating grass can rapidly wear teeth down, kangaroos have a special adaptation where their molar teeth move forward in their jaws over time. Old, worn teeth are pushed forwards and fall out to make way for new, unworn teeth that are much better at chewing. It’s a bit like a conveyor belt of teeth. This process keeps going until the oldest kangaroos have only a couple of teeth left.

Scientists have measured the rate at which molar progression happens and found that it corresponds accurately with age. Elephant teeth move in a very similar way and this technique works to age them as well.

Teeth tell more than age

As part of our study, we looked to see if there were differences in the incisor teeth between male and female kangaroos. We found incisors belonging to male kangaroos generally grow faster and can wear down more quickly than the incisors of females.

Information like this is important for understanding animal ecology, as it points to males and females foraging and feeding differently in the wild. Across the animal kingdom, teeth can tell us a remarkable amount about feeding behaviors, different diets and patterns of evolution.

Insights into the lives of ancient kangaroos

There are four species of kangaroo alive today. The largest species is the red kangaroo, and the biggest males grow to around 90 kilograms.

Thousands of years ago, Australia had a wonderful diversity of giant long- and short-faced kangaroos. Some of these likely ran instead of hopped and weighed around 250 kilograms.

Our new methods will help scientists learn more about the lives of these extinct giants. It can be very difficult to determine the age of an extinct animal from a fossil and to work out if that fossil came from a male or female—but we hope that our new methods will bring insight from incisors.

Use a roaming eSIM on your summer travels to avoid cellphone data fees

Use a roaming eSIM on your summer travels to avoid cellphone data fees

One Tech Tip: Use a roaming eSIM on your summer travels to avoid cellphone data fees

For summer trips overseas, a smartphone is essential for most people. How else will you check Google Maps to find your Airbnb, post an Instagram video from the Eiffel Tower, or WhatsApp friends and family back home?

Of course, if you’re using apps that gobble up data while traveling in a foreign country, there’s always a risk of racking up hefty roaming fees from your phone carrier. The solution? An international travel eSIM for your smartphone.

How do you use this technology? Here are some tips.

What’s an eSIM?

If you’ve ever bought a new cellphone, you’re probably familiar with the SIM card. Short for subscriber identity module, the SIM is a little chip the size of a fingernail that fits into a slot on most phones. Without it, you couldn’t get cell service because it contains your account information and phone number.

But physical SIM cards are slowly being replaced by eSIMs—the e stands for embedded—built into newer phones. These digital versions do the same thing and can make life easier, though people used to physical SIMs might find them confusing at first.

Why should I use an eSIM?

They make switching cell carriers easier. And if you’ve bought a new phone recently, you might not even have a choice: Apple got rid of the SIM card tray starting with the iPhone 14 released in September 2022.

They’re especially beneficial for travelers. If you’ve got a compatible cellphone, you can add an eSIM from a virtual carrier that has better data roaming rates than your home network. Many phones will allow you to add more than one eSIM, making it easy to switch back and forth, or—for phones with the capability—use two at the same time.

Think of the convenience: Gone are the days of arriving in a strange country after a long flight, looking for a local phone company’s airport kiosk, carefully popping open the SIM tray with a pin to swap in the new chip, and trying not to lose the existing one.

Where do I get a roaming eSIM and how much will I pay?

The eSIM market is booming. Kester Mann, director of consumer research at CCS Insight, says there are dozens of providers that can be found online, with names like Nomad, Holafly, Easysim, Airhub and Airalo.

“These guys have a role to play because I think they offer a very affordable and attractive opportunity for international travelers,” Mann said.

The boom means there’s plenty of competition keeping rates low. Prices are typically clearly displayed online, either through a menu of packages on the provider’s website or a calculator based on the amount of data needed and trip length.

Some 800 carriers support eSIMs, according to CCS, so international coverage is extensive. Many eSIM providers offer packages based on country or region, so you can check which ones have good rates for the place you’ll be visiting and sign up in advance. Traveling to Europe and need data for a month covering 30 countries? Airalo offers, for example, 10 gigabytes at $37 while Holafly’s package has unlimited data for 69 euros ($75).

For an upcoming trip to Prague, I bought 5 gigabytes of data for just $5 from Global Yo. I was slightly put off by some negative reviews professing problems buying, installing or activating the company’s eSIMs, but I didn’t have any problems myself.

How do I put an eSIM on my phone?

You’ll need a phone that’s unlocked for use with different wireless carriers.

If you’re not setting up a new phone, the typical activation method is with a QR code, or a more conventional string of numbers and letters. If you’re planning a trip and buy one before you leave, it’s a good idea to print out the code if you don’t want to activate right away.

For iPhones, go to your Settings menu, then to either the Cellular or Mobile Service section, then tap Add eSIM. You’ll be prompted to scan the code, or manually enter it. The process is similar for Android users. Samsung has a guide for Galaxy devices, and Google has a help page for Pixel users, while eSIM carriers have step-by-step instructions. Apple has a YouTube video, as well as tip sheets on using eSIMs for international travel and on using two eSIMs simultaneously.

If you’ve got a phone that supports dual eSIMs, you “can pick potentially the best network based on price and or coverage” while traveling, said Mann.

Some carriers have their own apps to manage eSIMs and track data usage.

How do I know if my cellphone can use an eSIM?

More than 200 devices support the technology, CCS Insight says. U.K. phone company Vodafone has a list of compatible devices. Or dial (asterisk)#06#—an EID code indicates it’s compatible.

For iPhone users, it’s any model released since the XS, XS Max or XR, as well as recent iPads. They’re compatible with any Samsung Galaxy devices released since 2020, and Google Pixel 4 and newer models will work; some Pixel 3 devices also support them.

Does it always make sense to use a travel eSIM?

First check your own carrier’s roaming costs for the places you’re visiting. Sometimes it’s not worth it.

“Roaming costs these days are far lower and less prohibitive than they once were,” said Mann. They’ve even been abolished for European Union residents crossing the 27-nation bloc’s internal borders. But travelers in Britain, which has left the EU, are facing them again for travel to the continent.

A new study sheds light on the crucial role of allies in social movements, showing how their participation can sway public opinion on protests. By positively influencing public perceptions and encouraging participation from both advantaged and disadvantaged groups, allies can play a significant role in addressing structural inequality. This research offers valuable insights for activists and policymakers aiming to foster positive change in society.

A new study led by Dr. Devorah Manekin from Hebrew University’s Department of International Relations highlights how allies from advantaged groups can support social movements of disadvantaged groups. This research, focused on the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, shows how White allies positively influenced public opinion among both Black and White audiences. The work is published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Manekin and her team used surveys and social media analysis to understand the impact of allies. They discovered that among White respondents, allies increased public attention and support for the protests. Among Black audiences, allies were supported for their perceived strategic benefits, such as attracting attention to the movement and reducing the likelihood of heavy policing.

The study also found that, while protests led by ethnic minorities are often perceived as more violent and requiring more police, the presence of allies reduced these negative perceptions, making the protests feel safer for everyone.

Dr. Manekin said, “Our research shows how important allies can be in shaping public opinion and increasing support for social movements. While there are valid concerns about allies becoming overly prominent in the movement, our findings show that thoughtful allyship is perceived positively by the public and can thus be a powerful means of combating inequality.”

These insights are valuable for activists, policymakers, and researchers, helping them understand and support social movements better.
